The total production of fruits and vegetables in the world is around 370 MT India ranks first in the world with an annual output of 32 MT India with its current production of 32 MT of fruit, accounts for about 8% of the world’s fruit production. The diverse agro-climatic zones in the country make it possible to grow almost all varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables. The Fruit Processing sector has grown about 20% per annum. However, the growth rates have been extensively higher for frozen fruits and vegetables (121%) and dehydrated fruits and vegetables (24%). However, India loses about 35-40% of the produce due to improper post harvest management; a loss estimated at Rs. 40,000 crores per annum equivalent to annual consumption of UK.
Transportation of Fresh Vegetables, Fruits, Vaccines, Blood, Flowers, etc. is gaining more attention due to awareness regarding the hygiene and quality. Till today all cold storages are dependent on power generated by DG sets to maintain temperatures during power failures.
